OUR VISION

Through a decade  of serving as senior in-house counsel with well known publicly and privately held corporations and three more decades acting as lead transaction counsel and a trial attorney, we have learned a few things.

Everyone counts or nobody counts.  Civility is essential in every interaction we, as lawyers and advocates, have with clients, adverse parties, opposing counsel, the courts, juries and the other side of every transaction.  Humility and hard work go along way to enhancing civility and living by the rule that everyone counts.

As attorneys, we are operate in what many refer to as a "service industry". Therefore, we must provide "added value" to our clients in every engagement and clearly understand the clients' needs, goals, and limitations.  But we are more than a service provider.  We are a profession that must embrace the rules of ethics and responsibility that govern how we zealously serve our clients.  We are fortunate that all of our long-standing clients appreciate and also embrace the rules by which we must practice our profession.

Crucially important to successful representation of clients is achieving a good chemistry or 'fit" with the individual clients  and persons  who comprise the organizations that seek our representation.  The high quality of that "fit" is as important for any legal representation as having the resources, the law and the facts on your side.  It is particularly important in those matters where agreement with the other side or sides of a transaction is the goal or litigation takes the form of "damage control".

Not every case is a winner and having the appropriate fit and full, open and early communication with the client will prevent disappointed expectations.

The most successful transactions are those in which each party realistically perceives that what they gained is more valuable to them than what they have conceded.  Again, having the right "fit" between lawyer and client is a key factor in achieving such realistic perception of success.

This is our hindsight VISION of forty years of practice.  This is the simple lens through which we view the future.  This  is the VISION and guiding principles and foundation upon which the Law Office of Timothy J. Hughes began.

In implementing that VISION and serving our clients, we have established relationships with other attorneys with whom we  have practiced  or acted as co-counsel or party aligned counsel for many years and who are located in California and other parts of the United States and other countries.  All share the hindsight VISION described above.  While many of our clients prefer the direct and singular involvement of Tim Hughes, it is our continuing intention to assemble  the appropriate collaborative team to serve client needs that require more than the time and services of a single attorney.  In each instance where the team approach is needed, the team will be well experienced and streamlined and vetted with the client.  The members will be assigned tasks that are appropriate to their given expertise.  This approach is essential to cost-effective representation.  It is an approach through which the client actually knows and interacts with each lawyer on a small team.  It is an approach that is intended to avoid the inefficiency, duplication of effort, and over-billing that occurs when there is a revolving cast of attorneys working on a case or transaction.
